100 Moroccans try to scale the border fence into Spain
All of the young migrants were captured at the Melilla border and returned home
Around 100 young migrants tried to illegally enter the Spanish city of Melilla by scaling the double fence that separates Spain and Morocco on Monday night, November 6, but all were detained at the border and refused admission.
A government spokesperson confirmed that the breach was attempted close to Chinatown but that the situation was quickly contained by the Moroccan Security Forces, who remain on high alert in case of a second effort. On the Spanish side of the fence, the Guardia Civil have upped their presence “as a preventative measure.”
Attempts to cross into Spain from Morocco are a regular occurrence and most migrants are quickly turned back. However, the Spanish enclave made international headlines in 2022 when hundreds of people stormed the border in an event that became known worldwide as the Melilla Massacre.
Dozens of migrants were killed and police on both sides were accused of using undue force to subdue the escapees, and the incident gained global notoriety following a BBC documentary.
In this latest episode, the Moroccan Auxiliary Forces, known locally as the Mejannis, reportedly had to use anti-riot gear to head off the migrants. Guardia Civil vehicles sped to the border at around 11pm after several small explosions were heard in the area but in the end their services weren’t required.
