ARCHIVED - 65,000 euros to repair unstable San Julian Castle in Cartagena
The Cartagena structure has been on the red list of historical sites for four months
Permission has finally been granted for restoration work to begin on the San Julián Castle in the municipality of Cartagena, Murcia, four months after the historic site was placed on the Hispana Nostra heritage red list due to its “terrible state of conservation”.
Although the site is currently owned by Telefónica, the company needed the go-ahead from the municipal council to begin restoration work and permission was granted this Wednesday October 6.
According to Telefónica, the project will focus on stabilizing the areas most at risk of collapsing, including the access passage and the wall around the arms courtyard. The company has estimated that the project will cost around 65,000 euros and aim to complete the restoration work within the next six months.
Representatives from the Town Hall have reiterated the need to repair the damaged historical site, stating that “this space is highly frequented by runners, hikers and cyclists” meaning that the castle’s current state of disrepair could be dangerous for members of the public.
The 18th century Castle was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 1997 and constitutes an important cultural and touristic site in the municipality, as its unique location means that the whole bay of Cartagena is visible from the fortification.
