ARCHIVED - 81-year-old man dies after being pulled unconscious from the sea at Malaga beach
The pensioner was discovered floating face down at El Palo beach in Malaga city
Drowning was the third leading cause of death due to external or accidental causes in 2020, claiming the lives of 406 people. And in the latest tragedy to hit Malaga city's coastline, an 81-year-old man has drowned at El Palo beach.
Around 7.15pm, the lifeguard service located near Calle Banda del Mar alerted Emergencias 112 Andalucía to an elderly man who needed assistance after being found floating face down in the sea and pulled unconscious from the water.
The National Police, an ambulance and medics were rushed to the scene, but despite performing CPR on the elderly bather, there was nothing the emergency responders could do to save the victim's life. It's not clear if he was a local resident or tourist.
Located between playas Pedregalejo and El Chanquete, El Palo beach is 1.2 kilometres long and 25 metres wide on average and has been awarded the Q accreditation for Tourist Quality.
