ARCHIVED - 9 out of 10 Murcia hotels were full this bank holiday weekend
A return to form for Murcia’s tourist sector in the first long weekend after summer
Hotels in the Region of Murcia were almost 90% full over this bank holiday weekend, in what is starting to look like a return to form for the region’s tourist economy as the Covid pandemic abates in Spain.
While hoteliers in the Murcia region had a reasonably good summer, everyone was apprehensive to see what the first long weekend after the summer period would bring for the tourism sector. As it turned out, the widespread vaccination programme and the rapidly falling incidence for coronavirus throughout the country have helped to restore travellers’ faith in Murcia as a holiday destination, whereas this time last year, the second wave was just beginning to wreak havoc in Spain.
“The weekend has been phenomenal, we have almost reached full capacity,” said Bartolomé Vera, vice president of Hostemur and head of the hotel employers in the region. “We have noticed that, with the easing of restrictions, there is no longer so much concern. They are booking without asking many questions, something that didn’t happen until recently. That’s a good sign. The freedom of movement makes travelling more bearable.”
In the same breath, Hostemur has criticised the regional government for its harsh coronavirus restrictions, stating that Murcia is the “most restrictive region in Spain”, which may hurt the hospitality sector in the long run.
Even so, the recent figures have hotel owners and businesses in the tourist sector confident for the end of the year, too. There is another long weekend coming up as Monday November 1 is also a national holiday in Spain, ‘El Día de Todos los Santos’.
