Local councils in Alicante province can apply for up to 50,000 euros to tidy up and landscape plots of land used as dumping grounds
Alicante Council has allocated 400,000 euros to clear and landscape plots of land used as illegal dumping sites across the province.
In addition to the cleaning and removal of rubble, furniture and abandoned belongings, the initiative includes the landscaping of these uncontrolled dumping grounds, with a maximum of 50,000 euros available to local authorities.
"Through this subsidy program we collaborate with the town councils in the adaptation of those areas where there has been unauthorised dumping of waste, in order to remove it to adapt the space and eradicate this ongoing problem," explained the councillor responsible for open spaces, Miguel Ángel Sánchez.
Alicante Provincial Council set up the grant scheme in 2017, and since then more than one million euros has been spent clearing and restoring 51 plots of land previously blighted by illegally dumped rubbish, with more than 25,000 cubic metres of waste removed.
Orihuela Council embarked on a large-scale clear-up of illegally dumped waste on roadsides in the municipality this week, following continued complaints from farmers.
