ARCHIVED - Alicante TRAM fares will be slashed by 50 per cent from this weekend
Alicante city, Marina Baixa and Marina Alta lines will be up to half price from Friday June 17

As many as 700,000 TRAM d'Alacant passengers are expected to benefit from a massive price reduction this summer with plans to slash fares by up to 50% from Friday June 17.
Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana has adjusted its fare zone model, reducing them from six to three in Alicante, the Marina Baixa and Marina Alta, which means 10-trip passes will now cost 8 euros, 12 euros and 20 euros respectively.
Presenting the new zone model this week, President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig explained: "Sustainability and public transport are linked and we must accelerate all public processes that allow public transport to be a key player in the decarbonisation and quality of life of citizens. At a time when the cost of living is rising, it is essential that both the public and private sectors make every effort to contain prices".
And the government is in talks with local councils and intercity transport operators to extend the TRAM zone model and expand it to the whole of the Alicante metropolitan area.
Other initiatives to "promote equality in the use of the transport service" included the introduction of free travel on Sundays in April, a move which Puig has hailed a "success" leading to a 40 to 50% increase in passengers compared to previous Sundays. In May, more than 155,000 people took advantage of the Sunday offer.
"In order to respond to this increase in demand, which is very positive for the economy, and to promote public transport, the number of trains running at peak times has been increased, capacity control has been carried out at some stations and security staff has been increased, " added Puig.
In May, more than one million TRAM journeys were made - an 18% increase compared to the same month in 2019, prior to the pandemic.
