ARCHIVED - Amazon Go cashierless supermarkets to arrive in Spain within 2 years
The online operator plans to open 100 stores in Spain, Italy and Germany
Online retail giant Amazon launched its supermarket chain under the name Amazon Go back in 2016 and since then, the concept has really taken off in the UK and US, with half a dozen stores dotted around London and more than 20 in cities such as New York, Seattle, San Francisco and Chicago.
So far, the cashierless stores haven’t made a huge impact on the rest of Europe but this is all set to change, as the online shopping operator plans to open one hundred of its Amazon Go supermarkets in Spain, Germany and Italy between 2023 and 2024.
Far from your conventional grocery store, Amazon Go’s shopping concept is based on self-service and state-of-the-art ‘Just Walk Out’ technology. The shops don’t have checkouts or cashier staff; instead, customers simply pick up the items they want and leave.
So, where’s the catch? Well, anyone wanting to avail of the service has to download the Amazon Go app and have an Amazon account, which identifies customers with a QR code that they scan when they enter the supermarket.
In the store, cameras and motion sensors detect all the products that the customer buys and it is even capable of locating, through artificial intelligence, items that a person returns to the shelves. When the user leaves the establishment, they will receive a notification on their mobile with the purchase invoice. This purchase mechanism is what Amazon calls ‘Just Walk Out’.
It might sound like something out of a science fiction movie, but many retail experts believe cashierless shopping could be the wave of the future. Covid has changed the way we purchase everything from groceries to electronics, and most people are now very comfortable shopping online. Amazon Go takes this ‘buy-now-pay-later’ model to the physical store, where customers don’t have to wait to receive their products. It’s also another step in the direction of a cashless society.
