ARCHIVED - Andalusia is not experiencing a seventh wave, says health minister: Covid update June 28
The cumulative incidence rate in Andalucía has jumped more than 40 points in the last four days
The regional Minister of Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre, has this week denied that Andalucía is in the grip of a seventh coronavirus wave, despite rising infections and hospitalisations. He has discounted opinions that the BA2 and BA5 lineages are more of a cause for concern but has asked that people remain on their guard.
The minister acknowledged that the rise in hospitalisations between last Friday and Tuesday June 28 is “significant;”general admissions have climbed to 573 although ICU occupancy has dropped by three patients, indicating that the health services are still under “minimal pressure.”
“If we compare with the rest of the autonomous communities, Andalusia is the community with the lowest hospital and ICU pressure. But this cannot mislead us, we have increased admissions by 96, and we have seen that in other communities they are rising steadily,” he said.
Coronavirus infections
The health authorities in Andalucía have registered a total of 5,515 new coronavirus cases on June 28, of which 2,290 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
This is 494 fewer cases than on the last update four days ago, and brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,541,568.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 573 people hospitalised for Covid in Andalucía while the number of patients being treated for more serious conditions in intensive care has dropped to 25.
“Right now, at the ICU level, we are at the lowest figure in the entire pandemic. We would have to go back to the summer of 2020 to find pressure figures in the ICU like the one we have now, that is, a minimum pressure," the Minister explained.
By province, Seville has registered 133 hospitalised patients, of which seven are in the ICU, followed by Malaga with 117, six in the ICU; Granada with 96 admitted, none in ICU; Cádiz with 68, three in the ICU; Jaén with 52, five in the ICU; Córdoba with 49, two in the ICU; Almería with 40, and none in the ICU; and Huelva with 38, two in the ICU.
The death toll remains at 29, the same as in the last report of Friday June 24.
Cumulative incidence rate
Andalucía continues to have the lowest cumulative incidence rate of the entire country, standing at 349.79 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, although this figure is also on the rise and has jumped 40.05 points in the last four days.
However, the average incidence over a 14-day period is still less than half the Spanish national average (755).
Vaccination data
As of June 28, a total of 7,450,600 people, representing 87.9% of the entire population of Andalucía, are double jabbed while 7,609,828 (89.8%) have received at least one dose.
In addition, 4,375,780 people have now also received a booster shot.
