ARCHIVED - Andalusia registers its first case of Covid-19 Kraken variant
The Health Minister has called for calm after the first case of Kraken was detected in the region
Andalusia has registered the first case of the Kraken variant of Covid-19, as announced this Tuesday January 17 by the Regional Minister of Health and Families, Catalina García, who did not provide further details about the affected patient and their location.
In an interview on Spanish media’s Canal Sur Radio, García pleaded for “calm” in the face of the announcement of this first case of the Kraken variant in the region, noting that information provided by the US authorities confirms that “it is not more virulent” than other strains, although it is “more contagious”.
As a result of this first case, the Andalusian Minister of Health has once again called on the Ministry of Health to test any and all passengers arriving from China at Spanish airports instead of limiting themselves to “random tests”.
In Spain as a whole, coronavirus infections are slowing down – despite the emergence of the Kraken variant – but there are still over 15,000 new cases and over 100 deaths in the country every week.
Andalusia’s Covid expert committee is holding its first meeting in seven months this Tuesday to analyse the development of the pandemic, mainly in old people’s homes, where visits will not be restricted and only “preventive” measures will be studied.
The Regional Minister of Health acknowledged that the figures for the administration of the fourth dose of the Covid vaccine among the population over 60 years of age in Andalusia are far from those seen in the first phase of the pandemic, and announced that as of next week appointments will not be necessary in vaccination centres.
