ARCHIVED - Beaches in Alicante evacuated and closed after shark sighting
The shark was spotted off the coast of Moraira in the Marina Alta, Alicante province
The red flag was raised on beaches in Moraira after a Guardia Civil diver spotted a shark during a routine dive on Saturday October 2.
The alarm was immediately raised, prompting the town council and National Police to evacuate and close the beaches of Portet, l’Ampolla and Platgetes as “a precautionary measure”, and experts set about trying to determine the exact species and whether the animal represented a danger to bathers.
“Both the Guardia Civil and the National Police are still investigating what type of shark it is and the reason for its appearance on the coast of Teulada Moraira, an area outside its usual natural habitat,” said the council in a statement.
And while experts continue to try to trace the shark, the red flag has been lifted, and as of Monday afternoon, swimmers can once again enter the water.
Shocked bathers at Cala Capitan beach in Orihuela Costa, also in Alicante province, were ordered to leave the sea following the possible sighting of two blue sharks at the end of August. It followed numerous reports of sharks off Alicante coastline in the space of a week.
And locals living in Galicia were left stunned when they spotted a five-metre-long great white on September 29.
