ARCHIVED - Europe advises booster Covid jab after three months instead of six
Spain is currently administering the third jab to all those over 60
While it is still unclear how the Omicron variant will affect the evolution of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s fair to say that health bosses in Spain and across the globe are worried, a situation which has no doubt been exacerbated by Pfizer’s claim this week that its double dose isn’t as effective against the new strain.
It should come as no surprise, therefore, that the European Medicine’s Agency (EMA) proposed on Thursday December 9 that it would be “desirable” for countries to consider administering the third booster jab three months after the second dose, rather than waiting six months.
The proposal could present a considerable problem for Spain. While the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, has repeatedly said that she will be guided by the decisions made in Europe, she reiterated last week that this current vaccination campaign will follow the same procedure as the first; that is, the booster will be administered according to age groups, from oldest to youngest.
Currently, Spain is administering the third vaccine to those over the age of 60, but requires them to have received the last dose six months previously. If Ms Darias were to follow the new EMA guidelines, all those who were double jabbed before October would need their booster now.
According to the head of the vaccine strategy of the EMA, Marco Cavalieri, while the current recommendation is to administer the booster after six months, “the available data indicate that it is safe and effective to administer it as soon as three months”, a move that Europe is now promoting with the threat of Omicron.
Mr Cavalieri has admitted that there are only “provisional” data available on this variant, but believes that it could be more contagious and that it “considerably reduces” the “neutralising capacity” of the current vaccines.
