ARCHIVED - Heatwave in Spain: which provinces will beat the heat this weekend
Spain will swelter in the first heatwave of the year but many areas will remain below 30ºC
All of Spain is set to sizzle in baking temperatures this coming weekend, with Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12, expecting the earliest heatwave this country has seen since 1981.
It’s already been a warm and settled week so far but things will ramp up a gear in the coming days, and the thermometers will comfortably exceed 40ºC in many areas, with orange and yellow warnings for extreme high temperatures in place in Andalucía across the weekend.
The Region of Murcia won’t stray far from the mid-30s on Saturday and Sunday while Alicante will escape the worst, hovering at around 30ºC.

Northern Spain will be the coolest spot this coming weekend, with the mercury hardly hitting 26ºC in several regions, and incredibly, storm warnings are even in place for Castilla y Leon and La Rioja.
But if you want to enjoy the sunshine without going to extremes, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has helpfully provided a list of provincial capitals where the temperatures will remain below an altogether more pleasant 30ºC:
- Barcelona: 28ºC
- Bilbao: 25ºC
- Ceuta: 26ºC
- A Coruña: 23ºC
- Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: 24ºC
- Lugo: 24ºC
- Malaga: 28ºC
- Melilla: 26°C
- Oviedo: 22ºC
- San Sebastian: 23ºC
- Santa Cruz de Tenerife: 27ºC
- Santander: 22ºC
- Tarragona: 28ºC
- Vitoria: 28ºC
