ARCHIVED - Hundreds of truckers block Murcia roads in protest
The demonstrators caused huge rush-hour delays in Murcia and Cartagena
A week into the national transport sector strike and the situation is going from bad to worse in the Region of Murcia. After a caravan of truckers all but stopped motorway traffic last week in Cartagena, similar scenes were reported in the port town and in the municipality of Murcia on Monday morning, March 21.
In the capital of the region, a caravan of more than 100 trucks and tractors set off from Nueva Condomina this morning, while in Cartagena, a parallel protest unfolded at 8am on various streets, such as Paseo Alfonso XIII. Scheduled for the rush hour, the demonstrations were concentrated in areas with schools, universities and businesses, delaying bus services and causing major disruption which lasted for several hours.

Although additional officers of the Local and National Police were deployed to reduce the impact as much as possible, there was little that could be done to alleviate the traffic jams as dozens more farmers, taxi drivers and driving school instructors joined the demonstration as the morning wore on.
For the last seven days, picketers have been delaying trucks travelling into and out of the Escombreras port, to the extent that the Guardia Civil has been posted on site to ensure that working vehicles can pass through and unload safely.
The defiant truckers have no intention of easing off on their campaign; rather, the National Platform for the Defence of the Transport Sector, which called the strike action, insisted on Monday that they will not stop until the government has come up with viable solutions for the increase in fuel costs.
In addition, the platform urged drivers to continue their go-slow protests “so that they can be seen, even though they want to make us invisible”.
