ARCHIVED - Madrid woman arrested for selling fake PCR results
Police in Spain are still trying to track down all of the woman’s customers
The National Police in Madrid have arrested a woman for selling false negative PCR tests to facilitate travelling abroad for people who may actually have coronavirus. The scam was brought to the attention of officials in the middle of August when the head of a laboratory providing fit-to-fly tests discovered that falsified certificates bearing his company’s name were in circulation, minus the QR code. He insisted that the negative PCR results were being issued without his clinic ever having examined the patients in question.
Needless to say, the issue posed serious health risks as passengers in possession of the false test results could have travelled both throughout Spain and internationally, spreading coronavirus. During the course of the investigation, officers established that the suspect may have been working for a travel agency and was offering the guaranteed negative PCR tests for just 30 euros. In all, the police were able to confirm that 16 fraudulent tests were issued.
At the beginning of September, the woman was arrested at her home in the Madrid town of Fuenlabrada and has been charged with the crime of document falsification, but officials are still trying to track down all of her customers as it is feared that many more people could have travelled abroad with false PCR results.
