ARCHIVED - Tarragona shooter granted euthanasia request despite impending trial
The gunman suffered spinal cord damage after gunning down three colleagues and two police officers in Barcelona

A court in Barcelona has green-lighted the assisted death request of Marin Eugen Sabau, a 46-year-old Romanian man who is awaiting trial for injuring five people after opening fire at a Securitas office in Tarragona last December.
Mr Sabau had recently been fired from his security job before he returned to his former place of work and gunned down his boss and two colleagues. As he was fleeing the scene he came upon a police checkpoint where he again opened fire, seriously injuring two officers.
The disgruntled employee then barricaded himself into a remote farmhouse and a shootout ensued; as a result, he suffered an irreversible spinal cord injury and has been detained at the Tarrasa Penitentiary Hospital ever since.
With his trial approaching, the prisoner requested euthanasia as a result of his permanent debilitation and chronic pain. Under normal circumstances, this would qualify Mr Sabau for an assisted death, but one of the injured officers appealed to the courts to deny the request and force the gunman to face trial.
However, this week the judge has ruled that state regulations do not allow the courts to interfere in an assisted death process. Moreover, the court insisted that the rights to physical and moral integrity and dignity, freedom and autonomy take “priority” over any pending legal action.
Lawyer for the injured officer, José Antonio Bitos, responded that he will present a new appeal to the Provincial Court on behalf of his client.
“The intention is to exhaust all avenues. We will reach the Constitutional Court if necessary,” the lawyer insisted.
For the moment, the prisoner’s euthanasia will continue through the Evaluation Commission and it is very possible that his wish will be granted before the courts respond.
