Body discovered in search for missing British expat in Torrevieja
Weeks of appeals end in tragedy as investigators recover remains near Lago Jardin
The search for Marc Tulloch Hewson, a 63-year-old British resident missing from Torrevieja since Friday September 20, has ended in heartbreak with the discovery of a body in the Lago Jardin area. Local reports confirm that the remains were found in a wooded zone hidden behind residential properties, nearly a month after his disappearance sparked a widespread volunteer campaign led by friends and family.Marc’s absence prompted urgent appeals from loved ones and expat community members, with about 25 volunteers supporting the Guardia Civil’s search efforts every day. Anne Constantine, an expat who was instrumental in leading the appeal, revealed that Marc’s sister Fiona had made direct contact to personally confirm the tragic news.
In a statement shared online, one friend expressed: “Thank you to everyone for sharing and reaching out with ideas and kind words in the search for our friend. Sadly his body has been found… not the outcome we hoped for but the support whilst he was missing was of huge support to his family and friends.” Marc’s sister Fiona also thanked everyone who joined the search, reassuring supporters that “they did everything they possibly could.
”Spanish authorities have not officially identified the remains yet and will carry out an autopsy in the coming days. Until then, no further details are expected from investigators, who continue to work on confirming the circumstances.
The outcome has brought a sombre close to a process that saw local expats rally together, posting pleas for help, sharing photographs and retracing Marc’s last known steps throughout Torrevieja, Los Balcones and Orihuela Costa. Community members are now sadly leaving messages of condolence following the official announcement.
For many in the area, the search may be over, but the support and solidarity shown during these difficult weeks has left a lasting mark among those living far from home.
