ARCHIVED - British couple found dead in Mallorca home from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning
It’s believed the UK couple had been dead in their Spanish island home for two days before the bodies were discovered
A British couple who were found dead in their rural Mallorca home by a neighbour are believed to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning linked to a faulty butane heater or fireplace. The victims have only been identified as Sharon G and Michael A.
The son of the couple became worried when he couldn’t contact his parents, and alerted the caretaker of the property which is located near the picturesque town of Selva, nestled at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains.
When the local entered the home at around 4pm on Monday December 19, he found the 62-year-old man dead in a chair downstairs. The body of his 56-year-old wife was discovered in bed. Police believe the pair had been deceased for at least two days.
The Guardia Civil on the Spanish island said that the reports of the post mortems, which have yet to take place, will determine the direction of the investigation, but for the moment all evidence points to the faulty combustion of a gas heater or chimney.
According to official reports, there were no outward signs of violence at the home which the couple bought about 18 months ago.
Selva’s Mayor Joan Rotger, who travelled to the property on Monday afternoon, confirmed to the local press that the most likely cause of the untimely deaths was carbon monoxide poisoning.
Tenerife was also the scene of tragedy earlier this week when a British woman in her 50s died after suffering a severe head injury in a hit-and-run. The victim had been out walking with her elderly mother, who has since been released from hospital, when a van mounted the footpath in a residential area and ploughed into the pair from behind.
