British hiker, 39, found dead in the Canary Islands
The tourist’s body was found on a mountain trail in Fuerteventura

The body of a 39-year-old holidaymaker from the UK has been discovered on a hiking trail in Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. The deceased woman was found just before 1pm on Sunday August 13, one of the hottest days recorded in Spain so far this summer.
A spokesperson for a regional government emergency response coordination centre said: “The alert we received said a person who was unresponsive had been found on a dirt track in a mountain area in Morro Jable in Fuerteventura.
“The appropriate emergency response was activated immediately but the woman was confirmed dead on their arrival.”
Spanish police confirmed that the body, which was recovered from a mountainous area near the town of Morro Jable, was that of a British tourist but they have not yet released her name. While it’s suspected that she could have succumbed to heatstroke, a post mortem will be carried out in the coming days to confirm the cause of death.
A Guardia Civil source added: “She was wearing sports clothes and appears to have been out hiking on her own.
“There were no signs of visible violence on her body but it will be up to the autopsy to determine the cause of death and discover whether it was heat-related which is obviously one possibility.
“We cannot confirm what the cause might be at this stage.”
The temperatures in the Canary Islands on Sunday reached a suffocating 44.4ºC and the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) had issued a red weather warning for extreme heat. During these times of high alert, the authorities advise people to stay out of the sun in the middle of the day and to avoid strenuous outdoor exercise.
Just hours after the British woman’s body was discovered a 50-year-old Dutch tourist died when she collapsed during a hike in Tenerife. Her death has also been linked to the heatwave in the Canary Islands.
