British man, 40, dies from carbon monoxide poisoning in Mallorca
His wife was found unconscious and is in a serious condition at Manacor Hospital
A 40-year-old British man was found dead at his home in the Son Barbasa urbanisation in Capdepera, Mallorca, on Saturday afternoon (May 6). His 38-year-old partner was pulled unconscious from the farmhouse with clear signs of carbon monoxide poisoning and is understood to be in critical condition at Manacor Hospital.
Early reports suggested that the gas leak came from a faulty refrigerator.
The alarm was raised shortly after 3pm by the deceased’s brother who contacted island police when he couldn’t get in touch with the couple for several hours. Officers from the Local Police of Capdepera found the couple in bed and noticed a strong smell of gas as soon as they entered the property. Sadly, the man was confirmed dead at the scene while his wife was barely breathing.
Once Guardia Civil technicians arrived at the scene, they confirmed that the cylinder at the back of the fridge had been damaged and was leaking.
It is suspected that the man’s death occurred earlier that morning, and that the carbon monoxide would have been seeping throughout the house all night while the couple slept in the master bedroom. Medical professionals assure that the victim would have been unconscious at the time of his death.
The property where the sad event occurred is owned by the father of the deceased British man. It was not the couple's habitual residence, and local reports confirm that they had just moved into the house a few days before the tragedy.
Last December, another British couple was found dead in their rural Mallorcan home from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.
