ARCHIVED - British man, 74, critically ill after almost drowning on Spanish beach
The victim ran into difficulty while swimming at Sant Elm beach in Mallorca
A 74-year-old British man has been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Palmaplanas health centre in Mallorca after running into difficulty while swimming shortly after 6pm on Thursday September 15.
The bather was seen struggling in the water on the Balearic Island’s Sant Elm beach and had lost consciousness by the time he was pulled from the water by lifeguards. Off-duty health workers, who happened to be on the beach at the time, assisted with cardiorespiratory first aid and, thanks to their considerable efforts, the victim regained consciousness.

By this time, officers from the Local Police and three ambulances from the SAMU 061 emergency team had arrived at the beach and the British gentleman was transferred to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.
It is not known if the man lives in Mallorca or was there on holiday.
The news follows the death of another British resident on a Mallorca beach less than two weeks ago, on September 6. The 78-year-old Briton, who was holidaying on the Spanish island, was found floating in the water at Can Pere Antoni beach, and despite resuscitation efforts, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
