British teens suspected of starting Orihuela Costa wildfire
The blaze erupted on scrub land close to the Playa Flamenca shopping centre
A fire that broke out earlier this week in Playa Flamenca, very close to the local commercial centre, has raised suspicions of arson after it quickly spread through nearby scrub land. The blaze has left the popular expat community deeply concerned as the authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
According to Facebook group ‘Crime Watch Orihuela Costa’, the fire was first noticed at around 5pm on Wednesday February 22 and one local witness claims to have seen three British teenagers, estimated to be around 15 years old, in the canyon area just before the flames erupted. One of the teens was described as wearing a blue jacket and having short blonde hair, but all three suspects managed to flee the scene before officers arrived.
Emergency services responded promptly to contain the fire, which was fuelled by dry pine needles in the canyon, creating a massive wall of flames nearly 10 metres wide. Police officials closed off the road in both directions to manage the situation.
This latest incident follows two previous fires in the area within a short period of time, leading to fears of repeated arson attacks. Local residents are being encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. However, police still haven’t ruled out the possibility that the Playa Flamenca fire was a simple accident, caused by a discarded cigarette or other such carelessness.
The build-up of rubbish in the surrounding nature reserve, attributed to gatherings of youngsters and visitors to a nearby cannabis social club, poses both environmental and fire risks. Efforts are being stepped up to address these issues and ensure the safety of the local ecosystem and community.
Anyone with information regarding the incident or the individuals involved is asked to come forward. Authorities are working hard to prevent future occurrences and protect Playa Flamenca’s natural and residential areas.
