ARCHIVED - Carrefour, Mercadona, Lidl... which supermarkets are open in Spain this Easter weekend?
Thursday April 6 marks the start of a long weekend in Spain, during which most supermarkets will alter their opening hours
In Spain, the dates for Easter week, or Semana Santa as it’s locally known, vary year to year but in 2023, the bank holiday begins on Holy Thursday, April 6, stretching through April 7 (Good Friday) and into the coming weekend. Both of these dates are holidays throughout Spain which means that the supermarkets will invariably change their opening and closing hours.
Aside from the breathtaking processions that will be held in most cities and towns across the country, Easter Sunday is also a family day, characterised by a big gathering of relatives for a tasty meal. If you still need to get to the shops before the big day fear not, as we have put together a comprehensive guide to the opening hours of all the major supermarkets over Easter weekend.
Mercadona
As is usual for one of the most popular supermarket chains in Spain, Mercadona stores will remain closed this Easter Sunday, April 9. They’ll also be shut on Good Friday but will open on Saturday April 8, although the hours will vary depending on the locations. Opening hours can be checked on the Mercadona website here.
Carrefour
In the case of Carrefour, many of its stores open on Sundays and holidays, although some do so with reduced hours, while in other locations they do remain closed.
This year, hours of operation may vary on Saturday April 8, so it’s best to check your local store on the company’s website.
Thus, it will be necessary to take into account the specific hours for April 6 and 8, 2023 and consult the specific store, something that can be done in its supermarket search engine.
Lidl
Outside of holidays, Lidl opens from 9am to 10pm between Monday and Saturday and the budget supermarket reduces its operating hours on Sundays in most places.
Since the times can vary widely in the case of Lidl, you can check the opening times for your specific store right here.
Dia
Dia supermarkets have regular hours from 8.30am to 10pm or from 9am until 9.30pm between Monday and Saturday, while on Sundays most of their stores only open in the morning.
Depending on the location, many Dia supermarkets will operate on limited hours during the holidays of April 6 and 7, and some may remain closed altogether, so check the opening times here.
Aldi
The normal hours for Aldi are 9am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 10pm on Sundays and bank holidays. However, in some towns this chain remains closed so it will again be necessary to check the website.
Hipercor
Most Hipercor stores will operate on the reduced hours of 11am to 9pm on April 6 and 7, but since several will close altogether, it’s best to check the details for your local outlet on the official website.
Alcampo
Alcampo supermarkets usually open from Monday to Saturday between 9am and 10pm or from 8.30am to 9pm, depending on the store. Also, most of them are usually open on both Sundays and holidays, so you would expect them to be open on holidays.
In any case, it is convenient to look at the hours of each specific store in Alcampo, since depending on the location these may vary. Information can be found at this link.
