Leisure and fishing boats from Cartagena helped with the rescue
The tourist boat, Catamaran Ole, popular amongst both locals and holidaymakers, was sailing near Cartagena’s port on Sunday afternoon, November 14, when it sank with 33 passengers aboard, including six children.
Emergency services received the first call at around 4.24pm and a Maritime Rescue boat was sent to the scene along with a helicopter. Leisure and fishing boats who saw the Catamaran Ole go down around a mile off the coast also aided in the rescue and the families aboard later praised their quick action.

Once all of the passengers were safely in the port, the decision was made to take ten of them to the Santa Lucía Hospital to be treated for mild hypothermia, dizziness and slight bruising, but luckily no one was badly injured. At least two people were also treated for anxiety attacks at the scene.
At first, there were reports that one passenger had not been located, but the emergency services confirmed at 7.30pm that the missing person was in the hospital and all those abord Catamaran Ole were accounted for.
Though the cause of the shipwreck has not yet been determined, witnesses have stated that moments before the boat began to sink, they heard loud cracking and crunching noises.
The owner of Catamaran Ole is said to be distraught and has stated that she doesn’t know how this could have happened, as the boat had passed all technical inspections.
