ARCHIVED - Confirmed: Spain has just experienced the hottest summer in history
The average temperature across Spain in August was more than 2ºC higher than normal
It’s official: the summer of 2022 was indeed the warmest in the history of Spain, at least since meteorologists began keeping records of such things in 1961. For anyone living or holidaying here, the news will come as little surprise, since the season started unusually early with a June heatwave and the thermometers hardly budged from the mid-30s for three months.
The meteorological summer actually begins on June 1 and runs until August 31 and according to Aemet, during this period, Spain recorded “an average anomaly of +2.2ºC.” And although the rainfall during the summer was about normal, with the exception of the Canary Islands, where it rained three times as much, temperatures were 2ºC higher during August, with the national average standing at 24.71ºC. It was the second warmest August this century, behind only 2003.
The largest discrepancies were recorded in large areas of southern Galicia, Castilla y León, the Basque Country, Navarra, La Rioja, Aragón, Catalonia, Madrid, eastern Extremadura, northern and western Castilla-La Mancha, central and northern the Valencian Community and eastern Andalucia. There the mercury registered around 3ºC above normal, and as much as 4ºC in certain places.
“The maximum daily temperatures were on average 2.1°C above the normal value, while the minimum temperatures were 1.8°C above the average, resulting in a daily thermal oscillation 0.3°C higher than normal throughout the month,” Aemet confirmed. This is before taking into account the heatwave which raged between July 30 and August 15, which pushed the thermometers up to a maximum average of 36.1ºC in 27 provinces.
Given that the country’s reservoirs are in dire straits, it might be hard to believe that August was by no means a dry month, but the experts are clear that it was a “normal” month in terms of rainfall for the most part.
