ARCHIVED - Public Health Commission in Spain approves vaccinations for children
Each region in Spain will decide if the vaccines are administered in schools or health and vaccination centres
Speaking at a meeting of EU ministers in Brussels on Tuesday December 7, Spain’s Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, confirmed that the Public Health Commission has agreed to extend coronavirus vaccinations to children between the ages of 5 and 11, and that the campaign should “begin as of December 13”.
Ms Darias has thus far avoided specifying whether priority should be given to younger children, or if the jab should be administered in schools or health centres, but has rather left it up to each autonomous community to decide on the best means of roll-out themselves.
The second dose of the vaccine will be administered to children eight weeks after the first.
Spain will receive 1.3 million doses of the childhood vaccine next Monday, and the health authorities have recommended inoculating as many youngsters as possible with the first dose before Christmas. Under 12s currently have by far the highest cumulative incidence rate in the country, at 412 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In Spain, there are 3.3 million boys and girls in this age group.
Andalucía has already outlined its plan to vaccinate its 625,000 children “preferably at the health centre level” on Saturday mornings as soon as the first doses arrive. The Region of Murcia has also said that it plans to immunise the younger age group at mass vaccination points, “in view of the dates that are coming, with school holidays”.
