ARCHIVED - Denia still without Christmas lights sparking bitter criticism
Mayor of the municipality in the Marina Alta, Alicante province, has assured the lights will be turned on on December 11
Denia city council has come under fire over the lack of Christmas lights which should have been switched on at the end of November.
And whilst other towns have installed and decked out their Christmas trees, Denia remains tree-less.
In a statement, Popular Party spokesperson, María Mut, hit out at the delay in kicking off the festivities with the grand turning on of the festive lights.
"We are a week late in getting the Christmas lights up because the contracting process started late, and so as would be expected, the lights haven't even been put up.
"What is not logical however, is that, knowing so far in advance when the Christmas lights should be installed, this has happened at all. If the awarding process starts late, it is logical that they are not on time. Once again, they are late because of bad management. People will have arrived in our town to enjoy the long weekend and found Denia dreary with no Christmas spirit whatsoever".
Responding to the criticism on social media, alongside photographs of contractors installing festive decorations, Mayor Vincent Grimalt assured the lights will be turned on on December 11 during 'Nit de la Llum' when candles will be lit in several streets across the town.
"We will inaugurate Christmas and invite everybody to come along and celebrate this very special evening in support of local commerce," said the mayor.
Only one company, Pedreguer-based Santacreu Instalaciones Eléctricas, submitted a bid to carry out the installation of Christmas lighting in Denia, which was approved on Friday December 3, at a cost of 83,000 euros.
