ARCHIVED - Diesel prices break the 2-euro per litre barrier across Spain
Petrol and diesel are now cheaper in Spain than in the European Union

Even though the government bonus of 20 cents per litre is still in place, petrol and diesel prices continue to skyrocket across Spain. Diesel, in particular, broke a new record this week by reaching 1.872 euros per litre on average, exceeding the cost of petrol for the fifth consecutive week.
The situation is quickly getting out of hand, and Nadia Calvino, Minister of Economic Affairs has threatened that the government will cut the 20 cent discount at the end of July if operators continue to simply absorb the aid, thus keeping prices high.
Regarding diesel, a litre already exceeds or is close to 2 euros in more than 10% of the service stations across Spain, an increase that will impact a huge number of drivers since diesel vehicles still account for 14.6 million of the 24.6 million cars currently on the road in Spain.

According to data from the EU Oil Bulletin, which collates the average price registered at more than 11,400 Spanish filling stations, since January last year, diesel has seen a price increase of 56%. When the cost is compared to this same week in 2021, it has risen by 41%.
Today, it will cost 92 euros to fill an average 55-litre tank with diesel, 22 euros more than at the start of last year.
Petrol, of course, has not escaped this inflation and has reached 1.837 euros per litre, its second-highest price in history. Thus, unleaded has become 38% more expensive since the beginning of last year and at the moment, each fill will cost around 90 euros, which is 25 euros more than in January 2021.
Incredibly, despite these huge increases, the cost of fuel in Spain is still below the average of the European Union and the eurozone.
