ARCHIVED - Expat population in Denia grows for third consecutive year
British outweigh other expats in the Marina Alta town in Alicante province, but other nationalities are on the rise
Denia's diverse foreign population has grown for the third consecutive year with British expats outnumbering all other nationalities, although the number of German and Colombians settling in the town is on the increase.
There are currently 46,188 people of 111 different nationalities living in the capital of the Marina Alta region, with foreigners accounting for 27.04% of the total population - an increase of 1.44% compared to 2020.
And analysis of those registered in the municipal census shows that the British account for the highest number of migrants, with 1,431 (up 104 people in the last year), followed by Germans (1,313, up 215). Colombians (1,106, up 169), Romanians (946, up 38) and French (610, up 82).
In addition to Spanish, other nationalities include Ukranians, Italians, Bulgarians, Moroccans, Swiss and Venezuelan.
Denia Town Hall has a dedicated Attention to Migrant Persons Office (PANGEA) set up to offer assistance with social matters, benefits, housing, health, training and employment, and last year dealt with 496 inquiries – "an increase on previous years", according to the Town Hall.
The office also provides information and guidance relating to the protection of the rights of migrants in Denia, and keeps records relating to unemployment and housing.
In 2021 a total of 160 foreigners poted job offers through the Denia Town Hall Entry Register and 139 were finally filled.
As for reports on the suitability of housing for residence permits for children or family of a legal resident and, in addition to renewals, there were 64 requests in 2021, 62 of whivh were issued.
The foreigners' office in Denia is also involved in the prevention of racism and xenophobia and stages regular awareness workshops for primary and secondary school children.
