Fire brigade extinguishes two fires in Cieza overnight
Concerns are rising over an early start to wildfire season in Murcia

Firefighters in the Region of Murcia were called out twice last night to tackle fires in the town of Cieza, raising concerns about the potential early onset of wildfire season. The first fire occurred in an abandoned house, while the second burned through 300 metres of reeds and scrubland near the Segura River.
The first fire broke out at around 8pm on Monday March 31 in an abandoned ground-floor house on the RM-512 road, in the direction heading towards Abarán-Cieza. At 8.20pm, emergency services received calls reporting the incident. Firefighters from the Consortium for Fire Fighting and Rescue of the Region of Murcia (CEIS) were dispatched and managed to extinguish the flames. They returned to their base at 9.53pm, confirming that no injuries were reported, and only material damage was sustained.

Just hours later, in the early morning of Tuesday April 1, a fire was reported along the banks of the Segura River in the El Menjú area of Cieza. The blaze affected approximately 300 metres of reeds and scrubland. Emergency services received a dozen calls alerting them to the fire just after midnight. Witnesses pinpointed the location on the left bank of the river, near kilometre 4 of the RM-512 road.
Local police patrols from Cieza and Abarán, along with firefighters and an environmental agent, were dispatched to the scene. The fire was brought under control and extinguished by approximately 1.15am.
Each year, rising temperatures and drier conditions in Spain contribute to an increased risk of wildfires, but experts note that the Region is still far from the peak wildfire season as recent rainfall has kept the ground sufficiently moist, reducing the likelihood of large-scale fires for now.
