Five men drown in four days on the Costa Blanca
Swimmers and snorkellers among latest tragic deaths on Spain’s eastern coast

The first incident took place on Saturday June 28 at Moncayo beach in Guardamar del Segura. A 59-year-old Russian man was found floating in the sea by another swimmer. Emergency services rushed to the scene and attempted resuscitation, but were unable to revive him. His body was later transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Alicante for an autopsy.
Just a day later, on Sunday June 29, a 68-year-old Spanish man died while snorkelling at Campomanes beach in Altea. He was spotted unconscious in the water by other beachgoers, who pulled him ashore. Sadly, despite their efforts and those of the SAMU emergency team, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Later that same day, the third drowning was discovered in a private pool on Marinada Street in La Vila Joiosa. The body of a 61-year-old Ukrainian man was found lifeless in the water. The Guardia Civil launched an investigation, and while no foul play is suspected, the circumstances remain under review.
On Monday June 30, tragedy struck again at Setla-Mirarrosa beach in Dénia, where an 86-year-old man was pulled from the sea unconscious around 6 pm. Medical teams tried advanced resuscitation techniques, but he could not be saved. He is believed to have suffered a sudden cardiorespiratory arrest.
The most recent case occurred on Tuesday July 1, when an 82-year-old man collapsed while snorkelling in the cove of l’Advocat in Benissa. Although the area is unsupervised, lifeguards from nearby beaches rushed to help, along with local police, firefighters, and even a medical helicopter. Despite the fast response and extended resuscitation attempts, he could not be revived.
These five deaths follow the recent drowning of a 38-year-old foreign tourist in Cádiz, who also lost his life while swimming just days earlier.
