ARCHIVED - Four arrested in Seville for trying to sell a baby
A childless couple paid another woman to carry their baby in the Andalucía province

Four people have been arrested in Seville accused of crimes of illegal trafficking, the attempted sale of a child and document falsification after it was discovered a childless couple had paid a pregnant woman for her baby.
Social Services at the Virgen del Rocío Maternal and Child Hospital raised the alarm when a woman in labour was admitted carrying medical records and identity documentation that clearly didn’t belong to her.
It turns out that the soon-to-be mum had agreed to sell her newborn to another couple in exchange for a big payout.
Surrogacy, whereby couples who can’t have children hire a woman to carry a baby and then give it up in exchange for financial compensation, is still illegal in Spain despite numerous attempts by rights groups and political parties to change the strict law.
To make matters worse in this case, healthcare staff at the hospital considered this to be a “poorly controlled pregnancy”, since the mother failed to turn up for any tests, scans or examinations prior to going into labour.
In addition, the pregnant woman’s supposed medical records, which she presented at the hospital, stated that she had twice undergone in vitro fertilisation because she couldn’t have children, which the police believe proves she was posing as the prospective adoptive mother.
At the request of the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office, the newborn baby girl has been placed in the care of the Junta de Andalucía.
