ARCHIVED - German amongst three arrested over spate of home burglaries in Alicante towns
Three men have been detained in connection with a series of break-ins at homes on urbanisations in Teulada and Benissa
Three men, including a 68-year-old German, have been arrested following a spate of home burglaries in the Marina Alta towns of Teulada and Benissa.
In a bid to crackdown on robberies and crimes against property in the neighbouring towns, the Guardia Civil and Local Police set up surveillance in and around residential areas at the beginning of October, resulting in the arrest of the three suspects.
According to police sources, all of the detainees have prior records.
The German already faces charges for "robbery with force" in Benidorm and Denia, and has "numerous" previous convictions for similar offences. He has been remanded in prison.
A 22-year-old Moroccan is also suspected of a number of robberies, whilst a third man, a Romanian aged 36, is accused of gaining access to a home in Teulada on October 4 on the pretext he was collecting scrap before robbing the home owners. Both detainees were released with charges after appearing at Denia Magistrates' Court.
During the surveillance operation, police also arrested seven people for offences against road safety, driving without a licence and driving under the influence of alcohol.
To prevent home burglaries, the Guardia Civil is reminding the public that when leaving the house, always check that the doors and windows are properly closed and locked, to prevent entry by the 'slip and slide' procedure, and to be extra wary of strangers who ask for access to the property.
