German expat in wheelchair dies in horrific elevator accident at her Alicante villa
The 76-year-old became trapped in the external freight elevator at her home in Jávea

A 76-year-old German woman has died after becoming trapped in a freight elevator at her villa in Jávea in a tragic accident that has left neighbours deeply shaken.
The woman, who had lived in the northern Alicante town for several years, had been out for lunch at a local restaurant on Wednesday and returned home by adapted taxi.
Her villa is situated on a sloping plot on the slopes of Mount Montgó, with around forty steps leading up to the entrance, which she was unable to climb due to her reduced mobility. The property is fitted with an external freight elevator for exactly this reason.
On returning home, she climbed onto the elevator, but the mechanism failed to stop at the correct point, leaving her trapped in her wheelchair and repeatedly struck against the facade of the building.
Neighbours heard her screams and raised the alarm, with local police, the Red Cross, firefighters, a SAMU ambulance and the Guardia Civil all responding to the scene. Sadly, by the time the emergency services arrived, there was nothing they could do.
Born in Germany in 1950, the woman had made Jávea her home for a number of years. Her body was recovered by court order and taken for postmortem at around 6pm. The case is being investigated by the Guardia Civil station in Jávea.
