ARCHIVED - Hurricane Danielle changes direction and heads back towards Spain
If it hits Spain, the hurricane will likely strike as a typical autumn storm
At the end of last week, weather experts in the United States warned that a cyclone was forming off the coast of Spain and although meteorologists put the chances of Hurricane Danielle touching down on the mainland at less than 10%, these kinds of weather phenomena are nothing if not unpredictable.
And so it is that the incoming squall appears to have changed direction and could indeed be winging it’s way towards Spain in the coming days.
But if Hurricane Danielle does hit, what effects will it have?
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) predicted that from Wednesday September 7, Danielle is going to begin moving northeast, so "the chances of it affecting Spain, which already were low, they have decreased even more."

This is because, on its way to the northeast, the hurricane will run into colder waters and more unfavourable atmospheric conditions, so it will gradually weaken and, when it is close to Europe, it will become a storm. A storm which will certainly bring an abundance of rain and some strong winds, particularly in northern Spain, but certainly nothing remarkable compared to the DANAs the country has experienced in the past.
This forecast comes with a new warning, however, issued by Juan Jesús González Alemán, doctor in Physics and Superior State Meteorologist at Aemet: Danielle made a sudden turn in the middle of the Atlantic on Tuesday September 6 to head in a more easterly direction, making it more likely that Spain will experience storms this week.
Galicia in the north will be hardest hit, with accumulated rainfall of more than 100 litres expected from the end of the week, and even though areas like Alicante are on alert for high temperatures, the experts haven’t ruled out weaker showers further south.
