ARCHIVED - Will a hurricane really hit Spain next week?
The probability of hurricane Danielle forming near Spain is 70%, according to the National Hurricane Center of the United States
This summer has thrown every possible weather phenomenon at Spain: we’ve experienced the longest period of heatwaves in history, the Mediterranean Sea has reached boiling point and just as autumn arrives, hailstones the size of tennis balls have battered the north of the country. And it’s not over yet, since a cyclone developing around 1,200 kilometres west of the Azores Islands could very well descend on Spain next week.
According to Aemet’s Ruben del Campo, “It is possible that it will become a hurricane by next weekend, but it is too early to tell.” To be classified as such, the winds would have to exceed 120km/h, the probability of which the National Hurricane Center of the United States has already put at 70%.
Hurricane season in the Atlantic region normally begins on June 1 and runs until November 30, but activity this year has been unusually low. If the approaching storm does actually develop into a cyclone, it will be given the name ‘Danielle’ and will most likely strike the extreme northeast of Spain in the middle of next week.
Although the chances of violent storms have been put at around 10% by the experts, Aemet meteorologist Juan Jesús González Alemán has advised that Spain’s first hurricane of the season is nevertheless possible.
“It is a possible scenario,” he said, “since it has not yet formed, and very complex processes come into play. But it is a fairly serious and representative scenario to monitor and be aware of.”
If the hurricane approaches the northeast of the country, the first thing we’ll notice is a major warn outburst with a southerly wind, explained the expert. This explosion of hot air will leave in its wake strong winds and rough seas along the Atlantic coast, accompanied by heavy rain.
For now, the likelihood of most of mainland Spain experiencing the effects of Hurricane Danielle remains slim, but meteorologists will be keeping a close eye on the evolution of the storm in the coming days as its path is still very unpredictable.
