ARCHIVED - Iberdrola cyber attack compromises data of millions of customers in Spain
The electricity company insists that “sensitive” financial data wasn’t penetrated by the hackers in Spain
Spain’s energy giant Iberdrola has revealed that it suffered a cyber attack on March 15 which has affected 1.3 million customers, although the company has reassured that the hackers were unable to access “sensitive” information such as bank details. The attackers did however manage to infiltrate the system to glean data like names, DNI/NIE identification numbers, addresses and telephone numbers.
In a statement sent to its customers, Iberdrola assured that the necessary measures to mitigate the impact of the incidence have been implemented and that no financial data, like account numbers or credit cards details have been violated.
Representatives have, however, recommended that its customers be especially cautious of any emails or communications purporting to be from Iberdrola.
"If you have received the statement issued by the company, you must be vigilant and regularly monitor what information circulates on the Internet to detect if your private data is being used without your consent," the statement read.
Since the incident came to light, which occurred almost simultaneously with others in Spain and Europe, Iberdrola has revealed that it was warned by the United States government about the possibility of a cyber attack after the invasion of Ukraine.
According to sources from the electricity company, “the cyber attack has been limited” because, after the warning from the US, “appropriate measures were established and the leaking or theft of critical customer information has been avoided.”
While Iberdrola confirms that the warning was in relation to “the critical situation we are experiencing,” the company hasn’t revealed if it believes that Russia is behind the attack. However, CNN warned on Friday April 1 that new cyber attacks by hackers “associated with” Russian secret services were expected in the coming weeks.
