Residents of Cuevas del Almanzora (Almería) should not be alarmed if they hear a loud warning signal this Wednesday February 12. The Junta de Andalucía will be conducting an audible test of the alarm system at the Cuevas de Almanzora dam as part of an exercise to ensure the population knows how to act in case of an accident or flooding.

The Andalusian Regional Government, through the Andalusian Emergency Agency and 112 service, will carry out this test to evaluate the effectiveness of the emergency plan and response mechanisms.

The exercise will begin at 11am and will consist of checking the acoustics of the alarm system to guarantee its functionality in the event of a real emergency.

The sirens will sound intermittently over a one-hour period to familiarise the local community with the alert system and to assess its efficiency. This test is intended to enhance public awareness and ensure cooperation with emergency operatives should a flooding event occur.

The Andalusian Emergency Agency urges residents to remain calm during the test and to avoid unnecessary movements in the area between 11am and 12 midday to prevent confusion and allow the test to proceed smoothly.

While the risk of flooding at the dam is minimal due to strict regulations and safety measures, the emergency plan includes preventive actions to safeguard people. The dam is equipped with advanced monitoring systems to detect potential risks such as overflow, failure and breakage.

The test will simulate the siren activation process that would be used in an actual emergency. It will consist of three one-minute warning signals, each separated by five-second pauses. A continuous 30-second tone will mark the end of the alert.

Advice on how to act in an emergency

In the event of an actual incident, the Junta de Andalucía has shared guidelines for residents to follow:

Move to higher ground and designated safe areas
Follow instructions from emergency personnel
Stay away from rivers and streams
Keep informed via official channels such as 112 and the media
Only call 112 in case of an emergency to avoid overwhelming the system
Do not attempt to collect children from school, as teachers are trained to manage such situations

River floods can develop quickly, so it is crucial to evacuate immediately without turning back. Never attempt to cross flooded areas or use lifts, as power cuts could cause entrapment.

This exercise is part of ongoing efforts to ensure community safety and preparedness in the face of potential flooding risks.
