ARCHIVED - Illegal toxic waste dump discovered on Mazarron farm
The authorities found 70 tonnes of dangerous materials dumped at the Mazarrón site

The owner of a farm in Mazarrón is being investigated by the Guardia Civil of the Region of Murcia for a crime against the environment after enormous amounts of deadly toxic waste were discovered dumped on his land.
The investigation began when SEPRONA located a large concentration of solid waste stored indiscriminately on the Mazarrón site, and quickly spotted a number of cement pipes containing potentially lethal asbestos. Given the different types of materials, the high volume and the obvious absence of any security measures, the officers suspected that they had stumbled on an illegal dump.

More than 70 tonnes of toxic waste was uncovered on the 150 square metre plot. Given the stifling temperatures of recent days, with the entire Region in the grips of the summer’s third heatwave, the dump was made all the more deadly, since the exposure of many of the substances to heat could generate significant environmental risks.
The farmer has been brought before the courts in Totana and will now face between six months and two years behind bars along with a fine of 10 to 14 months. In addition, he will be disqualified from all related professions or trades for a period of one to two years.
