Incredible images of 'Comet of the Century' shooting over the Costa Blanca

For months now, astronomers have been at the edge of their seats waiting for the upcoming appearance of what many have dubbed ‘the comet of the century’. We’re approaching October 12, the night when C/2023 A3, also known as Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, will be easiest to see to the naked eye, but stargazers along the Costa Blanca have already caught a glimpse, and the footage is spectacular.

MeteOrihuela has shared some incredible images of the comet, captured in Orihuela and Benejúzar, which show its brightness and characteristic tail of dust and ice.

But what makes this comet so special? For starters, it's incredibly bright, setting it apart from most comets observed from Earth. In fact, many astronomy experts believe that its brilliance could even surpass that of the famous comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE), which dazzled observers in the summer of 2020.

And the best part is that, unlike many other celestial events, Tsuchinshan-ATLAS should be visible from all over Spain without the need for telescopes, binoculars or any kind of specialist equipment. You’ll have the best chance of catching a glimpse during the early morning hours, right before dawn.

However, astronomers are warning that the comet is in a critical phase of its journey. As it approaches the Sun, there's a possibility that it could disintegrate before completing its trajectory, something which has happened with other comets in the past.

So, if you're in the Costa Blanca region, make sure to get outside and enjoy the show while it lasts as ‘the Comet of the Century’ is undoubtedly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
