Irish suspect in Spain hotel murder has close links to Kinahan cartel
The 30-year-old man was denied bail by a Tarragona court this week
The young Irish man arrested on suspicion of murder in Salou on Sunday July 2 has been refused bail by a Tarragona judge and remanded in custody. The 30-year-old is accused of strangling his 36-year-old partner Kirsty Ward to death at the adults’-only four-star Magnolia Hotel in the Costa Dorada.
His alleged victim was found outside her hotel room and the suspect lying beside her with self-inflicted wrist wounds. The mum-of-two was pronounced dead at the scene and her partner was taken to hospital before being transferred to the local police station.
Now it has emerged that the north Dublin suspect has close ties to the notorious Kinahan cartel and reports suggest he was once arrested alongside hitman Caolan Smyth, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for the murder of rival Hutch gang member James ‘Mago’ Gately.
Barcelona police, known as the Mossos d’Esquadra, haven’t commented on the alleged cartel link, but confirmed that the suspect significantly “slowed” their attempts to notify the dead woman’s family during questioning.
A spokesperson said: “The man arrested on Sunday following the discovery of a woman’s body at a hotel in Salou has been taken to court.
“This matter is now one for the courts and we will not be making any further comment.”
A representative of the investigating magistrate added: “The Court of Violence Against Women in Tarragona today received the man arrested over the death of his partner at a hotel in Salou on Sunday.
“The investigating magistrate agreed to provisionally remand him in prison without bail.
“The case has been classified as a crime of homicide/assasination and will be categorised more specifically as the investigation progresses.”
As is usual in these cases, the suspect has not yet been named by the Spanish authorities.
