Jet2 flight from Spain makes emergency landing due to smoke inside plane
The plane was flying from Tenerife to Birmingham when the pilot reported a technical difficulty
A Jet2 flight carrying 220 passengers was diverted to Faro Airport in Portugal last Thursday February 22 due to what the airline described as a minor technical issue. However, it was later reported that the journey was aborted because smoke was detected inside the cabin.
The flight, LS1266, was heading from Tenerife South to Birmingham when the pilot decided to redirect the plane.
Upon arrival at Faro Airport, all passengers were safely evacuated and transferred to a different plane, which arrived in the UK just before midnight. Emergency services, including firefighters and police, were present at the scene to address the situation.
Although the issue was described as minor, the airline has not disclosed any further information about the cause of the smoke. Thankfully, there were no injuries or major complications during the emergency landing.
A spokesperson said: “Flight LS1266 from Tenerife to Birmingham followed standard procedure and diverted to Faro on February 22 due to a minor technical issue.
“The aircraft landed safely and customers continued their journey to Birmingham on a replacement aircraft.”
This event comes shortly after a similar incident involving a British Airways flight that was forced to return to Heathrow Airport due to fumes in the cockpit. That flight had taken off from Heathrow at 7.25am and was headed to Prague when the issue arose. It landed safely back at Heathrow at 8.41am.
In both cases, the flights were able to safely land and return to their destinations without any serious consequences.
And on another BA flight last October, four passengers became seriously ill amid reports of “unknown fumes” on a flight from Barcelona to London Heathrow.
