June 2023 was the second wettest of the century in Spain
Last month in Spain was also the ninth warmest on record
The torrential rain of last month may seem like a distant memory as we battle to keep cool in extraordinary temperatures, but this past June was actually the second wettest of the entire century in Spain, as well as the ninth warmest.
This rather muggy weather was as a result of the high levels of humidity that went hand in hand with frequent storms, culminating in an average of 67.2 litres per square metre of rain – 210% more than normal.
According to Aemet, this means that June 2023 was the fourth wettest since comprehensive records began in 1961, behind 1988, 1992 and 2010, and the second dampest of the 21st century.
Taking the crown is the Canary Islands where it was the rainiest June since 1961 thanks in large part to the battering it took from Storm Oscar.
And this trend is set to continue in the coming months as meteorologists believe that the summer of 2023 will end up being far hotter and wetter than normal.
As for June, what’s interesting is that the rainiest provinces in all of Spain were spread right across the country. Soria, right in the centre, recorded the highest levels of rainfall (178.4 litres per square metre), followed by Lugo in the northwest (174.4 litres) and Teruel in eastern Spain (156.6 litres).
Although the month was a complete washout, it was also especially warm, the average temperature on the mainland reaching 21.1°C, which is 1°C hotter than usual.
The days were toastiest of all in the coastal areas of Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea, while the thermometers tipped into the ‘very warm’ category in the rest of the northwest, the Mediterranean coast and the southwest of the country.
However, the temperatures really ramped up as we inched towards July and the rain began to ease off and the mercury registered a scorching 43.7ºC on June 26 in the town of Morón de la Frontera in Seville.
