Summer 2023: meteorologists predict Spain will be much hotter and wetter than usual
Rainfall this summer will be particularly heavy in the east of Spain while the islands are set to scorch
This year is already proving to be a strange one weather-wise, with tropical heat in April and wintery storms in June. And if the forecasts are anything to go by, summer 2023 will be another anomaly, with scorching heat and abundant rain throughout July and August.
As storm Oscar passes over Spain this weekend, the meteorologists believe the squall will clear the air and give rise to sweltering temperatures in the second half of the month. As the summer moves on, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) believes the entire country will become increasingly hot, particularly the Balearic and Canary Islands, and that it will likely be stormier and rainier than usual, especially in the Mediterranean.
Speaking at Aemet’s quarterly press conference, spokesperson Rubén del Campo confirmed there is a “high probability” of a “not only hot, but very hot” summer throughout Spain. Storms will also be far more abundant than in a typical year, although he doesn’t think this will do much to alleviate the ongoing drought.
According to del Campo’s calculations, there’s a 40% to 50% chance that the summer will be wetter than what we’re used to, with the Mediterranean coast and the Atlantic slope of Andalucia tipped to be doused with the most rain in the next couple of months.
"This is significant, taking into account that in the summer there is not usually very high rainfall," del Campo pointed out.
As for the blistering temperatures forecast, the probability that June, June and August will experiencing more record-breaking heat has risen to between 50% and 60%, a figure that climbs to 70% in the case of the Balearic and Canary Islands.
