ARCHIVED - King made to wait as Sanchez booed once again at Spain Day parade
After arriving late, the President of the Spanish government was met with jeering and boos from the waiting crowd

They say it’s tough at the top, and Spain’s President Sanchez can certainly attest to this as he’s greeted with jeering crowds at practically every public appearance he makes. The Spain Day celebrations in Madrid on October 12 this year were no exception and the public took no prisoners, whistling and booing as the presidential car arrived in Plaza de Lima.
To add insult to injury, President Sanchez actually turned up for the iconic military parade, the first since before the pandemic, after the King of Spain and his family. This meant that the monarchs were waiting around for a short time before the whole party could be led together to the grandstand.
While the royals were milling around, one of the Casa Real staff could be clearly heard saying: “Don’t open the door, the president is not here.”
The Spain Day celebrations were held just hours after the government revealed its extensive Energy Contingency Plan, a list of more than 70 gas and electricity saving measures for the autumn-winter season. Sanchez has been widely criticised for his part in the plan, which most feel doesn’t go far enough to lessen the economic burdens of the average household.
For their part, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, as usual, were greeted with wild applause and cheers, but the frosty reception for Sanchez was repeated as he left at the end of the parade.
He wasn’t alone though, as Defence Minster Margarita Robles also had to endure boos from the crowd as she arrived on foot.
It wouldn’t be the Spain Day parade without some drama: this year, the traditional parachute jump almost ended in disaster as one of the jumpers got his leg tangled in an enormous Spanish flag. Luckily though, he managed to free himself and land safely.
