ARCHIVED - La Palma volcano eruption could last up to 84 days
The volcano, situated on the Canary Island of La Palma, erupted last Sunday
The Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands has estimated that the current eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano will last between 24 and 84 days. The experts have based this prediction on what is known about the current situation and the evolution of historic eruptions, but they have admitted that it is far from an exact science, which is why the range has been left so wide.
The volcano, situated on the Canary Island of La Palma, erupted on Sunday September 19 and resulted in the evacuation of thousands of people from the danger zone. While no injury or loss of life were reported, more than one hundred homes were completely destroyed by the 20 million cubic metres of lava that flowed down the mountain, and geologists are now becoming increasingly concerned about the potential for toxic gasses once the steaming lava comes into contact with the sea.
The Institute has increased the area affected by lava to 154.37 hectares following the most up-to-date data from Copernicus EMS. In addition, since Tuesday September 21 the Canary Island Seismic Network has been registering a strong increase in volcanic tremors which is an indicator of the intensity of explosive activity in the volcano.
