ARCHIVED - Largest industrial solar mega-battery in Europe set to be installed in Alicante
Cubierta Solar will install one of the first and largest mega-batteries in Europe in Villena, Alicante province
One of the first and biggest mega-batteries in Europe will be installed at Alicante textile company TexAthenea located in Villena.
As part of a "commitment to innovation and the reduction of CO2 emissions" Cubierta Solar will construct the 2 megawatt hour storage system at the textile firm's warehouse in the latest collaboration between the two companies to "position themselves at the forefront of the sector with a pioneering and benchmark project".
The mega-battery will generate power equivalent to that required by 500 homes, and will enable TexAthenea to make significant savings and independence from the electricity grid.
"The company will combine the benefits of this technology with the energy produced by the solar panels installed on the roof of its production site, nearly 4 MWp of clean energy
"TexAthenea will make a qualitative leap in its production process, allowing it to store energy in the periods when prices are cheaper and consume it later when it cannot use photovoltaic energy or when the price of electricity is more expensive", explained Luis Navarro Buciega, manager of Cubierta Solar, adding that this will enable the firm to "plan its electricity expenditure in a more optimal and efficient way and take control of its bill, unaffected by the instabilities of the electricity market".
The mega-battery will be six metres wide and weigh close to 30 tonnes. These particular systems are becoming more and more popular, thanks to European Union subsidies of up to 65% of the cost of installation to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollutant gas emissions.
Mega-batteries also slash energy costs offered by the conventional grid by around 50%.
In 2018, TexAthenea took a major step towards self-consumption with the largest installation of photovoltaic panels in Spain; the size of five football pitches with a total of 2.77 MWp, at that time, and 8,316 panels.
During the first year of installation, the panels produced 21 MWh of renewable energy in one day of production.
