Lidl Spain food alert: popular snacks recalled from supermarkets due to presence of pesticides
The supermarket has withdrawn the contaminated popcorn from shelves across Spain

German supermarket chain Lidl has issued an urgent recall of one of its most popular products across Spain due to the presence of potentially dangerous pesticides.
The affected products are items from the Snack Day brand and concern three different varieties of salted popcorn.
“The manufacturer LIVEN SA requests to withdraw the following items, due to the presence of the pesticide Chlorpyrifos,” Lidl reported in a statement.
“In order to protect consumers, Lidl Spain has already withdrawn these items.”
However, the company is concerned that many families may have already purchased the popcorn and has urged customers not to consume it. Instead, they should return the package to their nearest Lidl store where they will be given a full refund, whether or not they have kept their receipt.
The manufacturer has apologised to all affected customers “for the inconvenience caused”.
Recalled items:

- Palomitas salt 80 grams of Snack Day: EAN 4056489510567.
- Palomitas microwave salt 3x100 grams of Snack Day: EAN 20657529.
- Palomitas microwave salt XXL 6x100 grams of Snack Day: EAN 20944582.
The supermarket chain has assured that “no other Snack Day brand product distributed by Lidl Spain is affected by this alert.”
Symptoms of having consumed pesticides
Customers who consume this type of pesticide in large quantities could suffer initial symptoms such as excess salivation and general discomfort.
Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate insecticide widely used in agriculture to control insects on crops, parasites in livestock and also as an aerosol in farming.
According to the State Registry of Polluting Emissions and Sources (PRTR), the pesticide can be absorbed into the body “by inhalation of the aerosol, through the skin and by ingestion”.
Exposure to small doses “does not pose any harm to human health,” the experts explain, but at high concentrations “it can cause damage to the brain and peripheral nerves.”
