More than 1,500 trains cancelled across Spain due to Renfe strike
The stoppages will take place in every region of Spain over five days
Renfe and Adif rail workers have announced a series of 24-hour strikes on November, 24 and 30 and December 1, 4 and 5 which has already resulted in the cancellation of 1,548 trains. However, the Ministry of Transport has now established the minimum services that must be maintained in order to prevent a complete break-down of Spain’s public transport system.
Throughout the industrial action, which has been called in protest of the Spanish government’s decision to hand the management of Catalonia’s communer trains over to the regional authorities, a minimum of 72% of all scheduled high-speed and long distance trains (AVE and Avlo) will have to run.
Only 65% of Media Distancia trains need operate while with Cercanías, the minimum number of scheduled services on offer will depend on the time: during peak hours, from 6am to 9am and again between 2pm and 4pm and 6.30pm to 8.30pm, 75% of trains will run. For the rest of the day, the service will stand at 50%.
Renfe will offer AVE, Long and Medium Distance passengers, whenever possible, the option of travelling on another train at the time closest to the one originally booked. If customers would rather not take the trip, they will be allowed to cancel or change their ticket free of charge.
