ARCHIVED - More than 5m euros in aid to purchase homes for volcano victims
The government in Spain will also offer another 5 million euros to purchase basic necessities for those who lost their homes in La Palma
The Council of Ministers will approve a decree on Tuesday September 28 that will provide aid worth 5.5 million euros to the government of the Canary Islands to purchase 107 properties for residents who lost their homes following the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano more than a week ago. In addition, approximately 5 million euros will be made available for basic necessities for those who have suffered loss or damage as a result of the catastrophe.
The most up to date data shows that some 5,000 people have been evacuated on the island of La Palma while between 300 and 400 buildings, including homes, have been “devastated by lava”. The central government in Spain has also pointed to the untold damage caused by the eruption to infrastructure, public property, crops, farms and industrial estates.
The Canarian government will be responsible for acquiring the new houses, and the homes will be a mixture of currently empty properties on the island and new builds. However, it has been stipulated that they must be available in a reasonably timely manner given the urgency of the situation. The difficulty of the situation is compounded by the fact that home owners will not be allowed to rebuild on land covered by lava, as it will likely become protected.
It is worth noting that the new decree stipulates that the amount of compensation offered to the victims will depend on any other aid on offer from either national or international organisations.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Finance, Budgets and European Affairs of the Government of the Canary Islands, Román Rodríguez, has indicated that the Spanish government has agreed to allocate an additional 11 million euros in aid to businesses, self-employed people, SMEs and companies on La Palma.
