ARCHIVED - More travel chaos as British Airways cancels 100 flights
The cancellations affect several domestic routes as well as flights to Spain
The travel chaos that has bombarded several UK airports in recent days, including London Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester shows no signs of abating. Yesterday, easyJet announced that it would be grounding around 240 flights over the next week and on Tuesday May 31, British Airways has followed suit, cancelling more than 100 domestic and international routes.
The airline has cited staff shortages, particularly among cabin crew and security personnel, as the main reason for the cancellations, but with laborious and lengthy recruitment processes, together with delays for clearance documents, many experts believe these problems will extend well into the summer.
Paul Charles, CEO of the PC Agency, said: "I'm afraid that some of these issues will continue into July as it's taking a long time for airports and airlines to recruit the required number of people.
"Shortages of staff are creating bottlenecks in security channels at airports as well as leading to flight cancellations due to lack of flight crew.”
BA has cancelled several domestic flights on May 31, including trips to Belfast, Edinburgh and Manchester while international travel to destinations like Amsterdam, Barcelona, Gibraltar and Madrid have also temporarily been scrapped.
Remember, if your flights have been cancelled by an airline this year, you may be entitled to compensation.
